Nancy Porteous Johnson

My early years as a painter focused on plein air, where I was stimulated and compelled by the challenge of constantly moving light and the shapes and shadows it created.More recently my approach has evolved to emphasize visual patterns which always catch my eye — falling snow patterns in my cross-country ski tracks, light patterns falling on a person’s face, patterns found in the dried grasses and reeds of nearby wetlands.Patterns inspire me to paint. Is it recognizing order surrounded by chaos, identifying familiar structure and its resultant harmony, or simply connecting patterns? Our scientific world speaks in patterns. Wherever the human eye can reach, there are patterns to paint - patterns which spark my inspiration.
